One of numerous collaborations between Sonic Youth's guitarist and songwriter Lee Ranaldo and the prolific jazz drummer William Hooker. This show sees a lot of fine interplay between some guitar pieces that lean close to drone and Hooker's percussion, with spoken word passages from the both of them.

R.E.M.'s first show in Wisconsin, travelling around the eastern Midwest for Thanksgiving '81. May 1993 was an awkward period for Radiohead, as their first album and a few singles had gone without making much of a splash (or so they thought). This show from Glasgow (the files say the 4th, citizeninsane and others suggest the 3rd) sees Thom in a talkative and angry mood, as he curses out their record label many times during the set. A longer setlist for the time period, almost all of Pablo Honey  and several B-sides feature. Okay recording, great performances of 'Anyone Can Play Guitar'...

Another early R.E.M. set, from the same state but a different city as the previous show. A seven song set from the beloved shoegaze group in their early days, opening up for Ride at the Kilburn in London. The first tape of Radiohead playing in the strange new land of America, and it's a great show (so great that several songs were released as official B-sides, and so great that the legendary Wesley Willis immortalised it in song ). The recording sounds excellent and the crowd is hugely energised - Thom calls them the greatest crowd they've had, and feeds off their energy (and maybe some other stuff) with a particularly frenetic vocal performance. Great performances of 'You', 'The Bends',...

One of many shows performed at Friday's by R.E.M. on early trips out of state, this is the first one with a recording. A good soundboard tape, the show is plagued by equipment issues to the extent that 'Carnival of Sorts' falls apart when they try to play it (they gave it a second runthrough later, but that wasn't included on the source CD). It's not the cleanest of all proshot videos, but Nirvana's performance at the second leg of Hollywood Rock 1993 has to be seen to be believed. Very high and wearing pyjama pants in front of a stadium of enraptured Brazilians, Kurt and co. make their way through a messy show with plenty of banter and frivolities - from the opening jam, to unprompted cigarette promotion and varying lyric changes, to a trumpet guest, to a costume change in the encore break. A great tape of a high-spirited show from the tour for The Boatman's Call , with eight songs and a B-side from that era featuring. Nirvana's first tasks for 1993 came with a return to South America, playing the largest shows of their career as headliners of the Hollywood Rock Festival in Brazil. Ahead of the first show in São Paulo, Kurt Cobain took the opportunity to get horrifyingly inebriated, leading to the most bizarre and shambolic performance his band ever played. Lyrics were slurred or improvised, chords were fumbled, guitars squealed like mad, and the band even completely gave up on playing a 'normal' show...

Bergslagsrocken Festival performance (their neighbours Ride, the bigger band at this point in time, were also playing at the festival in Sweden), a good show where they go through the numbers. Rarities 'Prove Yourself' and 'Million Dollar Question' go well, as does an absurd version of 'Creep' where Thom is almost in hysterics. (According to some sources, this is the second show of the day after they played at the Mejerietfestivalen, but that's a 600km journey by road and I doubt it strongly.)...

David Bowie started 1972 as a minor player on the English music scene, and ended it as perhaps the king of the world. Fresh off a rollicking tour of the United States, he played two consecutive shows at the Rainbow Theatre in London on the last two days before Christmas, with this second performance the ideal way to ring in ahead of the holiday season. It sounds like crap, but it's a great performance. Track listing: ['Ode to Joy' intro] Let's Spend the Night Together [Rolling Stones cover]...

Radiohead's first ever show in Germany, the first date on the final tour of a very  busy 1993. Opening for James, they don't have to reduce the setlist by that much, playing through much of Pablo Honey  and a few other tracks in a 40-minute set. It's a good recording of an oddly dispassionate show - Thom's loudest moment is yelling 'goodnight' at the end - but with nice renditions of 'Yes I Am' and 'Pop Is Dead'. A very nice iPhone video, filmed from right up the front, of the Smile performing 'Free in the Knowledge' and the lead-in jam to 'A Hairdryer' at the All Points East festival in London. It's a beautiful song, and it's entertaining seeing everyone in the group swap instruments during it.

One of a few different sources of the Cologne show, but this is the best one for my part. The noisiest band on a very impressive bill, Hair Police played the shortest set out of them, Wolf Eyes (a band that member Mike Connolly would later join), and Sonic Youth on a summer's Monday night. If you can get past the questionable audio quality, this is an unusual and enthralling show from a month before the release of Isn't Anything . Kevin gets on stage and immediately complains about the PA system, while Bilinda has a bone to pick with Steve Albini's band Rapeman (who were touring the UK at the same time) - the show opens with a variety of the old noise pop songs, and only two Isn't Anything  tracks feature, while the actual performance is fiery and dirty.
